Ecological restoration initiative launched by Lichtenberg

The Obersee in Alt-Hohenschoenhausen is currently undergoing a significant transformation, as a dredging project commences to address sediment accumulation and improve the lake's long-term water quality and ecological conditions.

The Environmental and Nature Conservation Office in Lichtenberg, supported by engineering firm AquaConstruct, is the client for this project. Funding for the measure, which amounts to approximately 967,000 euros, comes from the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection, and Environment through the Small Water Bodies program.

Before the dredging process begins, fish are carefully relocated to ensure their safety. Construction workers are also securing the shoreline by creating natural structures with stones and new reed plantations.

The dredging project aims to halt the sediment accumulation and improve the filter pump's efficiency, which has been affected due to the build-up of sediment. Sediment accumulation has been an issue, reducing the performance of the filter pump that removes phosphorus, a key pollutant in the lake.

The construction work has been awarded to Eggers Umwelttechnik GmbH, and an ecological monitoring team is accompanying the project to protect animals and plants during construction. The project combines ecological goals with the aim of improving the quality of life for residents.

The dredging process involves the use of a floating barrier, a suction dredger, a mobile screening press, and water construction blocks. The dewatered sediment is removed, and the cleaned water flows back into the lake.

The implementation of the project is progressing well, with the cleanup scheduled to be completed in December 2025. Part of the Obersee Park is being used for the construction works, with limited public access.

To make the background of the project transparent, the district office invites the public to a guided tour of the construction site at the Obersee, scheduled for Monday, 8th September 2025, at 5 pm. Experts will explain the technology used, the work process, and answer questions.

Unfortunately, the search results do not provide information about the authority commissioning the cleaning project at Obersee in Alt-Hohenschönhausen.

This dredging project is a significant step towards restoring the Obersee to its former glory, ensuring a cleaner, healthier, and more vibrant ecosystem for all to enjoy.
