Final match in Thuringia - Eckardt aims to defeat his former romantic interest.
ZFC Meuselwitz and Carl Zeiss Jena will face off in the state cup final. There's a lot on the line: Jena is aiming to win its fifth cup in a row, while Meuselwitz is looking for its first title since 2011.
For one player, this match holds extra significance: René Eckardt (34) will take on his former club, Jena. It's his seventh final appearance as a player from Jena, and he's only lost one - in 2009, in Erfurt, with a score of 2:3.
Now, Eckardt is determined to win against his former love!
He doubts that his own past will play a role in the game. "We're just here to lift the trophy," he says.
Bürger: "Little details decide!"
Meuselwitz playing in its home stadium and facing a sea of Jena fans doesn't bother Eckardt. "It will actually give us a boost," he claims.
Coach of Carl Zeiss, Henning Bürger (54), doesn't think they're the favorites. "A game like this is decided by small details, we're not the favorites," he says. He doesn't consider it a disadvantage that many players who are expected to bring the trophy to Jena on Saturday will be leaving the FCC right after the match. "From the moment you start conversing with the players, something changes. We've dealt with that well in recent weeks, and we'll handle it now," Bürger adds.
