Franzius Street Renovation Begins in Frankfurt's East Harbor

Frankfurt am Main's Amt für Straßenbau und Erschließung (ASE) and StraßenBeleuchtung Rhein-Main GmbH (SRM) have commenced a comprehensive modernization project on the Franzius Street, connecting the Osthafen and Honsell bridges to the Kaiserlei bridge.

Built in the 1920s and named after water engineering expert Ludwig Franzius, the Franzius Street serves as a central traffic axis for trucks, public transportation, pedestrians, and cyclists. The estimated cost of the renovation is approximately 8.7 million euros, with around 2.8 million euros covered by the state of Hesse under the Mobility Funding Act.

The renovation aims to adapt the street to modern requirements, create additional bike and pedestrian paths, and improve the infrastructure for businesses and logistics locations in the East Harbor in a sustainable way.

The Franzius Street, from Intzestrasse to Franziusplatz, will undergo a significant transformation. The road surface is being renewed and structurally reinforced, with the road width increasing to 6.85 meters and in some places to 7.35 meters. This will enhance traffic flow, making it more efficient.

New loading and parking zones are being created on the Franzius Street to optimize traffic flow for businesses and deliveries. A 2.75-meter-wide parking lane will clearly define these areas. On the south side of the street, new paths are being established for pedestrians and cyclists.

Detours during the renovation work will be via the Hanauer Landstraße. To minimize disruptions for businesses, the renovation is being scheduled during the summer holidays. At the level of the fire station, the Franzius Street will initially be a one-way street in one direction, then the other.

As part of the renovation, the three bus stops on line 31 ("Muhlwerk", "Hafenmuhlenweg", and "Staustufe") are being made barrier-free. The road surface of the Franzius Street is being renewed and structurally reinforced.

Construction work on the Franzius Street began on August 4, 2025, and is expected to continue until November 2028. The renovation of the Franzius Street is a significant step towards modernizing Frankfurt's infrastructure and improving the city's transportation network.
