Easily obtainable drugs are a growing concern, according to Streeck's warning
Federal Drug Commissioner Hendrik Streeck, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) political party, has issued a warning about the growing danger of easily accessible drugs, particularly focusing on the risk to young people.
In an interview with "Bild am Sonntag" published on a Sunday, Streeck expressed concerns about the spread of crack, a highly addictive and dangerous substance that can lead to severe health damage and aggressive behaviour. He emphasised that a single puff from a crack pipe can result in permanent addiction.
Streeck is particularly concerned about the situation posing a significant problem for youth protection. He stated that the delivery of these drugs can be arranged through services like taxis or other means, with the delivery often taking place directly to a teenager's room.
The Commissioner also highlighted the presence of other dangerous substances, such as Fentanyl and synthetic opioids like Nitazenes, which can be fatal on first use. Unlike heroin, there is no substitution therapy for crack; instead, behavioural therapies and psychotherapy are the only available options.
In the interview, Streeck criticised the handmade errors and contradictions in the Cannabis law, stating that the law is not well-made and that the effects of partial legalisation should be evaluated through evaluation results before any concrete concerns about increased drug misuse in certain regions can be confirmed.
In response to the growing problem, Streeck called for a nationwide early warning system for rescue services, addiction help, and those affected. He urged for immediate action to combat the increasing spread of dangerous drugs across Europe.
