Düsseldorf Police Arrest Suspected Fraudsters on A59
In an unusual incident, a civilian patrol from the Düsseldorf Police arrested two Romanian nationals on suspicion of a fraud scheme on the A59 near Hassels on August 27, 2025.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, around 14:20, when the patrol spotted two men in suits by a dark car on the hard shoulder of the motorway between Benrath and Düsseldorf-Süd junctions. The men were attempting to get other vehicles to stop, giving the impression that they were in distress.
Upon closer inspection, the patrol found that the duo, a 22-year-old and a 30-year-old, were engaged in a suspected fraud scheme. They were behaving uncooperatively and aggressively at the scene. One of the suspects even offered a "golden" ring to a 61-year-old passerby in an apparent attempt to solicit cash.
The 61-year-old, from Solingen, handed over a low three-digit amount of cash to the 22-year-old suspect. The suspects' vehicle, a white VW Golf, was found on the hard shoulder and was secured as evidence.
Police investigations regarding the incident are still ongoing. The location of the arrest was on the A59 at Hassels. The police advise caution when encountering people who seem to need help on the hard shoulder.
