Dutch football club Roda JC partners with KSA to study youth sports betting habits
Dutch football club Roda JC Kerkrade and the Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) have teamed up for a new research project. The study will focus on sports betting habits among young adults in the Parkstad region. It marks the first time a professional football club has worked directly with a gaming regulator on such an initiative.
The partnership comes as Roda JC has taken a firm stance against sports betting sponsorships. Club officials see this as a natural step in their efforts to promote responsible gambling awareness.
The research will run in November and December 2025. It aims to uncover how widespread sports betting is among young adults, along with their spending habits and common misconceptions. Michel Groothuizen, Chairman of the KSA, explained that the findings will offer a detailed look at the real-life experiences of young bettors in the area.
Roda JC's General Manager Jordens Peters has made it clear that the club wants to challenge the normalisation of sports betting. By refusing sponsorship deals from betting companies, the club has positioned itself as a strong advocate for responsible gambling. The research results, due in early 2026, will help shape educational programmes and communication campaigns. These campaigns will focus on raising awareness about the risks linked to sports betting. The KSA and Roda JC hope the data will guide targeted efforts to reduce harm among young people in the region.
The findings from this study will be used to develop new educational tools and public messaging. These will aim to better inform young adults about the potential dangers of sports betting. The project sets a precedent for future collaborations between football clubs and regulatory bodies in tackling gambling-related issues.
