Dutch Electric Vehicle Market Analysis in Week 9
The Netherlands is witnessing a significant shift towards electric mobility, with the number of Plugin-Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) on its roads steadily increasing. As of January 31, 2023, there were 192,247 PHEVs and 334,186 BEVs registered, marking a 2.8% and 1.8% increase respectively from the previous month.
The "Elektrisch Rijden Monitor 2022" report by ANWB provides valuable insights into the electric vehicle market in the Netherlands. The report includes data on the average purchase price of electric vehicles, the costs of energy consumption, and the cost per kilometer of driving, as well as findings from consumer surveys conducted in 10 European countries.
In 2022, over 328,000 electric passenger cars were in operation on Dutch roads, accounting for nearly 4% of all passenger cars. The demand for lithium batteries, a crucial component of these vehicles, is expected to increase significantly by 2030, with a projected expansion of more than 5 times globally and domestically.
The Netherlands boasts a robust charging infrastructure, with over 123,000 (semi)public charging points and nearly 1000 fast charging locations. This makes it a leader in charging infrastructure, with one (semi)public charging point per 2.7 electric cars. The number of fast charging locations has increased by around 350 in one year.
The growth of electric vehicles is not limited to personal vehicles. The number of EVs deployed in individual corporate fleets has increased by 49% in the past year, and leasing companies have increased their total deployment of EVs by 107%.
The report does not name specific companies engaged in electromobility, but it does highlight the commitment of the EV100 group. EV100, a coalition of companies, has deployed over 168,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in the past 12 months and now runs over 400,000 EVs globally. Collectively, EV100 members have committed 5.75 million vehicles covering 100 markets worldwide.
The report also showcases the progress and insights of the EV100 initiative, which aims to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. The top 3 models for new sales of BEV passenger cars in the Netherlands were the Tesla Model Y, Volvo CX40, and Peugeot 208.
Despite the surge in lithium battery consumption, the United States is expected to remain heavily import-dependent. To address this, a report called "Building a Robust and Resilient U.S. Lithium Battery Supply Chain | li-bridge" presents an action plan to develop a robust domestic manufacturing base and supply chain for lithium batteries, with 26 recommendations to bolster the US lithium battery sector.
If all committed vehicles are electrified by 2030, it would save 6,238,000 tons of CO2 annually. This underscores the potential of electric vehicles in reducing carbon emissions and contributing to a more sustainable future.
