Duchess Sophie departs from the United Kingdom following King Charles's grant of a unique, novel post
The Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, have both embarked on separate visits to Canada, marking significant milestones and celebrations.
In early September, Sophie began a four-day visit to Canada, returning after a two-year absence. This visit, in her new role as Royal Patron of Spruce Meadows' Masters tournament, is a "wonderful way" to mark the 50th Anniversary of Spruce Meadows, according to Linda Southern-Heathcott, the team and CEO of Spruce Meadows. During her visit, Sophie will tour the grounds, meet athletes, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders.
Sophie's visit is not her first to the country. She will also pay tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, who visited the same location in 1990 to inaugurate an event in her name. The event, which was held in her honour, is a testament to the Queen's enduring impact and support for local charities.
Meanwhile, the Duke of Edinburgh visited Canada two months prior, attending celebrations on Prince Edward Island to mark the 150th anniversary of The Prince Edward Island Regiment. In his role as Colonel-in-Chief of The Prince Edward Island Regiment, he participated in a Freedom of the City parade. His visit concluded with Canada Day celebrations, where he met Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The Duke of Edinburgh's visit was not in his new role as Royal Patron of Spruce Meadows' Masters tournament, unlike Sophie's current visit. However, he was appointed Royal Patron of Spruce Meadows in April 2025, recognising the organisation's dedication to sporting excellence and community and charitable initiatives.
Sophie's appointment as Royal Patron of Spruce Meadows was not her only recent royal appointment. In February 2025, she was appointed the new patron of the Mothers' Union, a prominent organisation within King Charles's monarchy.
The Duke of Edinburgh's visit to Canada, though primarily for the Regiment's anniversary celebrations, also included visits to Toronto and Ottawa. As the Duchess of Edinburgh continues her visit, Canadians look forward to celebrating with her and honouring the legacy of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
