Dublin's former GAA manager, Jim Gavin, potentially suitable for presidency role - worth considering?
Jim Gavin, Dublin Football Legend, Ponders Presidential Bid
Jim Gavin, the former Dublin GAA football manager, is making waves in Irish politics as rumours swirl about his potential candidacy for the Irish presidential election. Gavin, known for his stellar performance in various roles over the years, is seen as a below-the-radar operator and more of a technocrat.
Born and raised in Clondalkin, Gavin's parents hailed from west Clare, a part of the country in which he retains a strong emotional connection. His grandfathers, Michael Gavin and Sean Vaughan, both fought in the War of Independence.
Gavin marked himself out as a footballer with Round Towers GAA club and played with underage teams and at wing forward for the Dublin team that won the senior All-Ireland in 1995. His career in the GAA, however, is not the only notable aspect of his life.
A trained commercial jet pilot, Gavin has spent his post-Defence Forces career on the public service side, as a senior aviation regulator. He is currently the chief operations officer of the Irish Aviation Authority, where he has overall operational responsibility for air safety in Ireland.
Gavin's competence is highly regarded. Maj Gen Adrian Ó Murchú, former deputy chief of staff of Óglaigh na nÉireann, considers Gavin to be in the top 5% in the competence space. Political scientist Dr Theresa Reidy of UCC notes that presidential elections since 1990 have been unpredictable, and the public have not voted along party lines in the same way they did before.
Gavin's friends say he is more animated in private, and his work on the Football Review Committee is described as the most methodical piece of work they have ever come across. A GAA source close to Gavin throughout his career states that Gavin could not have done what he did without a formidable personality and powers of persuasion.
The GAA source highlights Gavin's work on the Football Review Committee and his engagement with various vested interests in devising the new Gaelic football rules as a standout project. Ó Murchú predicts that Gavin will apply the same forensic approach to considering a run for the presidency.
There is a strong core of support for Gavin within the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party, especially among Dublin TDs and Senators. The GAA source argues that Gavin could articulate a vision and a plan for the presidency that would be communicated with conviction.
However, some people who know Gavin have expressed skepticism about his political suitability. Gavin is not from the old school of shouty GAA managers and is perceived as polite, serious, unruffled, and undramatic to the point of blandness. Yet, Gavin is said to be humble enough to take advice from others and to recognize his own weaknesses.
The Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, has endorsed Gavin to seek the party's nomination for the Irish presidential election, marking his first significant involvement in politics. Whether Gavin will indeed run for the presidency remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—if he does, he will bring his meticulous approach, formidable personality, and powers of persuasion to the table.
