Dubai enlarges its power network with 13 new substations, aiming to bolster the city's development and expansion.
In a significant development, Dubai's power grid is set to grow with the commissioning of 13 new 132kV substations this year. This expansion project, overseen by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), is part of the organization's strategic infrastructure expansion aimed at ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply.
The newly commissioned substations serve key residential areas such as Al Athbah, Nadd Hessa, Al Khawaneej 2, Wadi Al Amardi, Al Barsha South 4, and Jebel Ali Industrial First. This expansion underscores DEWA's commitment to its role in Dubai's urban development, reinforcing Dubai's position as a global leader in urban development.
Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission Power at DEWA, completed the project with over 12 million safe working hours. The project's completion was marked by the utilization of advanced global technologies while maintaining stringent safety standards.
By the end of 2024, Dubai's power grid will include 360 operational 132kV substations, with 37 more under construction. The total investment in these transmission projects for the year 2024 was AED 2.1 billion.
HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stated their support for urban expansion in alignment with the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. He also emphasized the organization's commitment to meeting the rising electricity demand.
In addition to the 132kV substations, there are currently 27 high-voltage 400kV substations operational in Dubai, with two more under construction. The total number of high-voltage 400kV substations under construction is two.
To integrate these substations, DEWA installed 127 kilometers of ground cables. The three new 132kV substations under construction in 2024 and scheduled for completion before the end of the year are the Chifubu, Wusakile, and Chingola substations.
This expansion of DEWA's infrastructure is a testament to the organization's dedication to providing a robust and sustainable energy supply for the growing city of Dubai.
