Dubai-based guitar store offers comparison between high-end and affordable guitars: Discover which instrument yields superior sound quality
In the heart of Dubai's artsy and trendy Courtyard centre, a unique music store named Art of Guitar has been making waves since its opening six years ago. The mastermind behind this exclusive establishment is Rick Vlemmiks, a man with a passion for music and a knack for acquiring rare and coveted instruments.
Vlemmiks, a seasoned guitarist, has amassed a collection that would make any music enthusiast green with envy. His prized possessions include signed guitars and prototypes from legends such as John Lennon, Jeff Beck, Coldplay, Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones. But it's not just the big names that have caught his eye; he's also got a few pieces from lesser-known but equally talented artists.
One of Vlemmiks' most fascinating acquisitions is a prototype of Eric Clapton's acoustic guitar, which he purchased for $500,000 and later sold for $700,000. This particular guitar was one of ten units made and was gifted to celebrities, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Hugh Hefner, who received the first unit. After Hefner's passing in 2017, the guitar was auctioned off for almost Dh350,000 to none other than Rick Vlemmiks himself.
Hefner's guitar, with the serial number "PBY 001" inscribed on it, is just one of the many exclusive instruments that Vlemmiks sells at Art of Guitar. In fact, due to their exclusivity, some guitars are sold under Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs). This policy is not uncommon; some customers of the store have repairs or setups done under NDA as well.
But Vlemmiks' love for music extends beyond simply owning and selling rare instruments. He operates a music school that offers 100 free lesson packages to children with special needs. This philanthropic endeavour caught the attention of Ed Sheeran during his visit to the store in early 2024.
Speaking of Sheeran, Art of Guitar is also known for selling exclusive, one-of-a-kind instruments. During his visit, Sheeran signed a guitar that is now a part of the store's collection.
Guitarists, unlike their counterparts in piano or violin, are not known for their preference for versatility in instruments. Instead, they often desire a variety of instruments for different music styles. Vlemmiks' collection reflects this, with electric guitars for metal and rock, acoustic guitars for organic playing, and yet another for bluesy tunes.
One such unique instrument is a limited-edition, custom-made guitar manufactured by Gibson in 2000. This guitar features the Playboy magazine's iconic rabbit silhouette, made from hand-carved pieces of pearl. It's a testament to Vlemmiks' commitment to acquiring and preserving the rarest and most extraordinary guitars in the world.
In a world where music and rarity intertwine, Rick Vlemmiks and Art of Guitar stand as a beacon. Whether you're a music enthusiast, a collector, or a budding musician, a visit to Art of Guitar promises an unforgettable experience.
