Drones enable quick transportation of blood samples in Dresden, streamlining their delivery to the lab

In the innovation hub that is Dresden, German Copters DLS GmbH is making waves with its latest project. The company, based in the city, is planning to fly numerous new individual routes across the entire state of Saxony, using drone technology to revolutionize the transportation of blood samples.

Since early May, around 50 blood samples have been flown daily from 14 practices in the Ore Mountains to Dresden using a drone. This innovative approach saves time and personnel, bypassing traffic obstacles like traffic jams and construction sites, and ensuring the safe and quick arrival of the blood samples, especially during the pandemic.

The drone, designed by Philip Bรผchler, is equipped with three SIM cards to ensure constant reception. It can reach speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour and has a length of 2.40 meters. The drone weighs 19 kilograms and can last for about two hours on a single charge.

The drone does not fly completely autonomously and requires human intervention if obstacles appear on the route. It is overseen by experienced pilot Matea Zivkovic from Croatia. In case of deviations from approved routes, an emergency landing is required.

The routine route of the drone ensures the cargo arrives safely at its destination. By transporting samples via air, transport times can be reduced by up to 60 percent. Future plans include delivering samples directly to the window of the respective laboratory.

Obtaining permits is necessary for drones to move on new routes. However, there is no publicly available information about a person receiving approval to supply the entire state of Saxony with drone-based collection and transport of blood samples.

The test route between the Ore Mountains and the state capital has been successful. The project is another shining example of the innovation hub that is Dresden, demonstrating the city's commitment to advancing technology and improving healthcare services. The use of drones saves time, personnel, and most importantly, ensures the safe and quick delivery of vital blood samples.
