Dresden's restoration of Penguin Cafe for BUGA events
The iconic Penguin Café, a testament to the Ostmoderne era, is set to make a comeback in Dresden. After a brief hiatus, the café will find its new home in the Südpark, offering a fantastic view of the city.
Originally designed by architect Erich Lippmann in 1969 as a boulevard café in Berlin, the Penguin Café was moved to the Dresden Zoo in 1973. However, it had to be dismantled and stored when a new building was constructed in the zoo in 2017.
Since then, the steel skeleton, roof construction, some tiles, and other equipment elements of the Penguin Café have been stored in the Lapidarium of the Office for Culture and Monument Protection. Now, they are being carefully reassembled in the Südpark.
The new location boasts an impressive view of the city, making it an attractive spot for visitors. The café is planned to reopen at the beginning of the Bundesgartenschau in Dresden in April 2023.
Two to three terraces are planned on the slope outside the Penguin Café, providing ample seating for guests to enjoy the view. Inside, the café could accommodate around 50 guests.
A park path is being created between Coal Street and the middle place of the Südpark, set to be completed by spring 2023. This path will serve for delivery and access to the Penguin Café.
In addition, an information stele with explanations about the history of the Penguin Café is planned. This will allow visitors to learn more about the café's unique design, its move from the zoo, and its role as a witness to the Ostmoderne era.
With its large glass facades and distinctive folding roof, the Penguin Café was a popular attraction for visitors in its previous location. It is expected that the café, upon rebuilding in the Südpark, could once again become a magnet for visitors.
A fruit tree orchard was created behind the future site of the Penguin Café in November 2022, adding to the park's natural beauty. The exact date for the reopening of the Penguin Café is not specified in the article, but anticipation is growing among Dresden residents and visitors alike.
As the Federal Garden Show approaches, the rebuilt Penguin Café is set to be a highlight, offering a unique blend of history, architecture, and culinary delights in the heart of Dresden's Südpark.
