Dr. Alexandra Tsigarida Named as a Board Trustee for the American Academy of Periodontology
The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) has taken a significant step forward in improving periodontal education with the launch of the AAP Education Access. This initiative, led by Dr. Alexandra Tsigarida, was developed to fill a gap in the curricula of periodontal programs across the United States and Canada.
Dr. Tsigarida, who serves as the Chair of the AAP's Education Committee and the Program Director for the Periodontology Residency Program at the Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH), has been instrumental in the creation of these supplementary pre-doctoral and post-doctoral educational materials.
The AAP Education Access includes a variety of training modules, four of which are currently available on the AAP website. One of these modules, led by Dr. Tsigarida, focuses on treating patients with disabilities.
Dr. Tsigarida's vision extends beyond just the development of these educational resources. She aims to promote strategic planning and certification processes of the American Board of Periodontology, foster collaborations with medical colleagues, and reinforce the Academy's vision on scientific and technological innovation.
As a new Trustee of the AAP's Board of Directors in its 7 District, representing New York and New Jersey, Dr. Tsigarida is committed to supporting and improving periodontal education at both pre-doc and postdoctoral levels.
The AAP's Education Committee, under Dr. Tsigarida's leadership, has been actively working on more training modules for periodontal education. These are currently in the planning and production stages.
Dr. Jack Caton, Chair of EIOH's Periodontology Department, expressed his delight over Dr. Tsigarida's latest accomplishment. He noted that her work has played an integral role in producing educational modules for dental schools' curricula in the past.
It's worth mentioning that the new chairman of the education committee of the American Academy of Periodontology, which concerns certification by the American Board of Periodontology, is Dr. Derek Stein.
In conclusion, the AAP Education Access is set to revolutionise periodontal education, providing valuable resources for dental students and residents. With Dr. Tsigarida at the helm, the future of periodontal education looks promising.
