Dortmund’s Bold Theater Director Takes on *Antichristie*—Will It Work?
Julia Wissert, Intendantin of the Schauspiel Dortmund, had to face much criticism. Now she dares a stage adaptation of Mithu Sanyal's 'Antichristie'.
Julia Wissert took charge of Schauspiel Dortmund in September 2020, becoming Germany’s youngest artistic director at the time. Her leadership began during the pandemic, with attendance numbers initially as low as 23%. Now, her contract has been extended through 2030, backed by the city’s SPD-led cultural department.
Wissert’s first season opened with the provocative production 2170 – What Will the City Have Been, the One We’ll Live In? The title set the tone for her politically engaged programming. Under her direction, young talents like Kieran Joel and Lola Fuchs have gained attention for their bold, socially conscious works.
With her contract now running until 2030, Wissert will continue shaping Schauspiel Dortmund’s future. The theatre’s focus on politically charged works and emerging directors remains central to her plans. Her next production, Antichristie, will test both her artistic vision and the audience’s response.
