Heed dog owners' alert! - Distemper, a lethal animal ailment, is once again on the rise.
With the rapid spread of distemper, pet owners in the neighboring district of Weilheim-Schongau, Bavaria, are also receiving cautions.
"Canine distemper can transmit by respiratory droplets through direct contact with an infected dog or animal," mentioned the district in a notification. Typically, the virus doesn't prevail for long outside an animal's body.
The Virus's Transmission
"Nonetheless, the virus can spread to other animals by excrement, contaminated food or water," shares the veterinary service. Hence, unvaccinated dogs may face uncertain risks while walking in nature.
Specifically, foxes, badgers, martens, and raccoons are susceptible to this pathogen and could contract the disease too. Distemper induces symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, nasal and eye discharge, coughing, breathing difficulty, vomiting, and diarrhea. And in worst cases, it can turn lethal.
Dog Vaccinations as Prevention
Vaccination against distemper has successfully shielded dogs from the virus. Hence, the Weilheim-Schongau Veterinary Office encourages all dog owners to maintain their vaccinations regularly. The virus is inexistent in cats, and humans are also immune to it.
