Discussion Scheduled with Dr. Arwen Cross of European XFEL at Upcoming Hamburg Meetings
The city of Hamburg is set to welcome a new innovation centre, HAWICC, following an investment of around 25 million euros. The centre will be developed by tecHHub Hamburg, a connected research organization for the future.
While the exact focus of HAWICC is yet to be announced, it's worth noting that Hamburg is home to the European XFEL, the world's largest X-ray laser. This cutting-edge facility, stretching 3.4 kilometres both underground and above ground, is located in the Hamburg metropolitan region, from DESY's site in the west of the city to Schenefeld in Schleswig-Holstein.
Scientists from around the world conduct basic research at the European XFEL, with a focus on areas such as energy, climate, and health. A new visitor centre, Lighthouse, opened late in 2024 at the European XFEL, offering a hands-on science experience.
Dr. Arwen Cross, the project manager of the visitor centre at European XFEL, will not be directly involved with the development of HAWICC. However, she will be sharing insights about her research, life on the campus, and inspiring the next generation of scientists at European XFEL at the Future Hamburg Talk on March 4, 2025.
The design competition for Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld, another significant scientific hub in the city, has been decided, but further details about its purpose or focus are yet to be disclosed. More information about both Science City Hamburg and the European XFEL can be found on their respective websites, sciencecity.hamburg and xfel.eu.
As the scientific community continues to push boundaries, Hamburg remains at the forefront of innovation, with exciting developments like the upcoming HAWICC centre. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting projects.
