Discussion on Podcast: Sigrid de Vries and Martin Daum delve into Europe's transition to carbon-free transportation methods

In a series of recent podcasts, Martin Daum, CEO of Daimler Truck AG, has been advocating for a path towards an emission-free transport economy in Europe. Daum's calls come at a time when the European Union is setting ambitious targets for sustainability in the transport sector.

Sigrid de Vries, a prominent figure in the industry, has highlighted Europe's progress in setting policy ambitions and vehicle targets for sustainability. However, de Vries also points out that the current pace of progress in building the necessary infrastructure is not fast enough to meet these ambitious targets.

Both Daum and de Vries agree that the transition to zero-emission transportation is crucial for a more sustainable world, despite potential increased costs. Daum emphasizes the importance of achieving this transition, acknowledging that it might become more expensive.

De Vries also stresses the need for a more comprehensive approach in the business-to-business market to establish the conditions necessary for a successful zero-emission transition. She calls for an "industry deal" to put industrial strategy back on the agenda, as many of the EU's Green Deal ambitions have been set in targets.

The development of a robust and comprehensive infrastructure for electric vehicle charging, hydrogen refilling, and green energy is a significant challenge on the path to decarbonised transport in Europe. A joint European approach to regulation is crucial to maintain competitiveness on the global stage, as fragmentation into individual markets with their own rules would create significant inefficiencies for transport.

De Vries further emphasizes the need to shift the focus towards implementing these goals in practical, real-world scenarios, rather than just setting strict targets. Both Daum and de Vries urge for immediate action to ensure a sustainable and competitive future for the transport industry in Europe.
