Discussion on Management Series (Segment Two): Mastery of On-Site Knowledge and Digitalization Essential for Expansion and Efficiency
In a significant meeting held on March 3, management and employee representatives at Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) gathered for the year's second session to discuss the topic of 'growth and performance'. The discussions were wide-ranging and aimed at accelerating changes and improving productivity across the company.
James Kuffner, TMC's Chief Digital Officer, is leading the charge for digital transformation at Woven Planet. His focus is on a "cloud-first" approach for seamless integration and endpoint protection for company devices, ensuring a smooth digital transition.
Keiji Yamamoto, Operating Officer at TMC, is working to improve the company's IT environment, particularly for digital natives. His plans include bridging generation gaps and offering support to positively impact the entire automotive industry.
Yoshihiro Nakata, Senior General Manager in charge of overseas sales and business, discussed the need to streamline TMC's operations. This includes eliminating coordination tasks aimed at obtaining upper-level approval and shifting towards a framework in which decision-making is based on direct dialogue between in-house company presidents and regional CEOs.
Nakata also emphasized the importance of speeding up overseas assignments for team members to encourage growth and improve their knowledge of customers and genba.
Masahiko Maeda, the Operating Officer in charge of technology, initiated efforts to bring the development of electronic control units back to Toyota's in-house workshops in 2022. He also discussed the benefits of internalization in terms of reducing development lead time and increasing competitiveness.
Young workers in technical/production fields and office staff at TMC expressed concerns about across-the-board training policies and job assignments making it difficult to advance in their careers. There were calls to move beyond traditional frameworks and offer people more opportunities to tackle new challenges on their own initiative.
Koji Sato, president of GAZOO Racing Company, emphasized the importance of taking a comprehensive view of car making, rather than subdividing processes, in order to make ever-better cars. He stressed the need to tackle challenges head-on for job satisfaction, happiness, and to win the trust of everyone working in the automotive industry.
Mitsuru Kawai, the Chairperson, reaffirmed these sentiments, stating that challenges lead to job satisfaction and happiness, and are crucial in winning the trust of everyone working in the automotive industry. He also highlighted the importance of tackling challenges in the pursuit of growth and success at Toyota.
The next session of the management discussion series will focus on the Toyota Production System (TPS), sharing management's response and explanation regarding skills and concepts central to all Toyota employees. The discussion concluded by reaffirming the importance of taking on challenges in the pursuit of growth and success at Toyota.
Yamamoto believes that a dynamic workplace is achieved by giving each individual the opportunity to challenge themselves and feel recognized by colleagues. This approach aims to foster a workplace that encourages innovation, productivity, and growth for everyone at TMC.
