Discussion between Britta Haßelmann and Andrey Merz/Selenskyj on Ukraine, focusing on their respective perspectives

In the lead-up to the highly anticipated meeting between President Joe Biden's successor, Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Alaska conference, a significant gathering took place at the Chancellery. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks, marking a crucial moment in the ongoing saga of Ukraine's struggle for sovereignty.

The focus of the discussion was clear: the immediate need for a ceasefire in Ukraine. With Russia's continued military aggression, the willingness to talk is meaningless without action. The European leaders present, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, all agreed on this point.

In a statement before the summit, President Zelenskyy outlined Ukraine's priorities, emphasising the importance of controlling its own fate and securing robust security guarantees. The defense of Ukraine's future and sovereignty, as well as Europe's security and peace order, was a central theme in the discussions.

Regrettably, Ukraine will not be present at the Trump-Putin meeting, a decision that has been met with disappointment. However, the European leaders have vowed to stand united, recognising the importance of their collective influence. If Putin stalls, the German government, along with its partners, may coordinate on further steps.

Chancellor Merz, in his role as a key player in these negotiations, has been urged to consider the need for unity when making future decisions. Britta Haßelmann, parliamentary group chair, commented on the meeting between Merz and Zelenskyy, stating that Europe's future requires unity, not national solo acts.

As the world watches the developments unfold, it is clear that the Alaska conference will be a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict. The unity shown among European leaders is a powerful force, one that could potentially steer the course of events in a more peaceful direction. The defense of Ukraine and Europe's security is not just a matter of national interest, but a matter of global peace and order.
