In the world of video games, a new indie gem has emerged, capturing the hearts of players with its unique premise and moving narrative. Developed by Okomotive, the team behind Far Lone Sails and Far Changing Tides, comes Herdling - a game about a young homeless boy and his extraordinary friendship with a giant sheep-like creature named Calihorn.

The story unfolds in a disheveled city, where the boy finds more Calihorns in need of help. Each Calihorn, with its head trapped in a cardboard box, is a symbol of distress, but also a chance for the boy to make a difference. With a stick in hand, he sets out to free them, forming a bond that will change his life forever.

The journey in Herdling is poignant, with no dialogue or narrative, yet a sense of peacefulness and tranquility pervades every moment. The player, now the boy, must figure out how to make the Calihorns feel safe to tame them and give them names. As the player's family of Calihorns grows, so does the sense of responsibility and protection.

The game's painterly art style contrasts the mottled browns and greys of the Calihorns against the changing environments, creating a beautiful landscape that players can explore. The Calihorns, each with their own personality, come in various sizes and can be adorned with ornaments, adding a touch of individuality to each creature.

The Calihorns need blue flowers for energy to power their movements, and players can feed them blue fruits to become closer to them and unlock new personality types. Along the way, players may encounter perilous areas, but can achieve the "Herdcore" achievement for reaching the end without losing a Calicorn.

Herdling is not a difficult game, involving light puzzle-solving and keeping the found family of Calihorns safe. The game can be completed within approximately 2.5 hours, making it a perfect choice for a relaxing yet engaging gaming experience.

Though Herdling does not have any upcoming sequels or expansions, fans of the game can look forward to other indie titles from Okomotive and the list of upcoming indie games for 2025 and beyond. For those seeking a heartwarming adventure that explores themes of friendship, home, and moving forward, Herdling is a must-play.
