Discovering Nebraska's Unspoiled Landscapes

Nebraska, often overlooked as a travel destination, is a treasure trove of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and stargazing opportunities.

Established in 1912 by President Theodore Roosevelt, Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge serves as a "crossroads of biodiversity." This refuge, nestled in the heart of Nebraska, is home to over 230 species of birds, including elk, deer, and a herd of 350 bison. The refuge was created to protect the region's wildlife, especially bison and other species at risk from overhunting. Today, it thrives as a sanctuary for over 200 bird species, around 40 mammal species, and about 15 reptile species.

For those with a passion for history, Chimney Rock National Historic Site stands as a significant landmark. This iconic rock formation has been significant to Native Americans, Western emigrants, and fur traders throughout history. Mentioned in more historic emigrant diaries than any other landmark along the Oregon Trail, Chimney Rock offers a glimpse into the past.

Nature lovers and stargazers will find solace at Merritt Reservoir. Designated an International Dark Sky Place by DarkSky International in 2022, Merritt Reservoir offers the best stargazing in the state. The Nebraska Star Party, a weeklong event taking place from July 20-25, 2025, features speakers, classes, and nightly observations. During a clear, moonless night in summer, the Milky Way shines brightly over this scenic reservoir.

Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area, located in a picturesque river valley, is also renowned for its muskie fishing.

The Sandhills National Scenic Byway (Highway 2) is a 272-mile route from Grand Island to Alliance, passing through the Sandhills Region. This region, the largest sand dune formation in the Western Hemisphere and the most intact swath of temperate grassland in the world, offers a unique and breathtaking landscape.

Alliance, a city along the Sandhills National Scenic Byway, is home to Carhenge, a quirky replica of England's Stonehenge made from cars.

For those interested in the sandhill crane migration, Grand Island offers The Sandhill Crane Ride, a bike ride in late March that allows participants to experience the spectacle up close. Nebraska hosts the largest concentration of sandhill cranes during their migration from March to mid-April in the Platte River Valley.

Fort Kearny State Recreation Area is another popular spot to view the sandhill crane migration. Walking bridges offer a close view of the action, making it an unforgettable experience.

Visit Nebraska, the state's tourism board, aims to expand Nebraska's travel industry, creating awareness, attracting increased visitors, and generating tourism revenue and economic gain throughout the state. To learn more about Visit Nebraska, visit VisitNebraska.com.
