Discovered: 71 rat paths along Sarawak-Kalimantan border, asserts home minister
In an effort to strengthen security along the border and combat illegal activities, the Malaysian government has allocated additional funds for various projects. A total of RM64 million has been allocated for 22 projects, with RM28 million earmarked for the development of seven additional security posts.
These projects cover both physical and non-physical aspects of security, involving the police, immigration department, and border agencies. The authorities, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and local municipal councils, are working together with Minister Saifuddin to combat illegal gaming arcades disguised as coffee shops in Sarawak.
The illegal operations are often hard to detect, but recent efforts have resulted in significant progress. Over 509 raids were conducted across Sarawak from January to July, leading to 535 arrests. The authorities have also been cooperating with Sarawak Energy Bhd to cut power and water supply to these illegal operations.
However, the challenge remains as the websites of these illegal operations can be taken down quickly, only for mirror websites to immediately reappear. To address this, the authorities will be reviewing laws to see if they need to be strengthened. Action will also be taken under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
In addition to border security, an additional 390 police officers will be stationed to protect the border, with two of these security posts to be located in Lubok Antu and Ba'kelalan. Minister Saifuddin also mentioned the existence of illegal gambling operations in Sarawak, highlighting the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between authorities.
