Directional shift on Severinusstraße
In the heart of Hürth-Hermülheim, the Lebensader Lux project is underway with the aim of making Luxemburger Straße more attractive and livable. The initiative, funded by the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the state of NRW, aims to create a traffic-calmed zone with greenery and high stay quality between Bonnstraße in the south and Horbeller Straße in the north.
Residents can benefit from this transformation in various ways. For instance, they can apply for free connections to the fiber optic network by contacting NetCologne at 0221 /2222 5544 or through glasfaserswunsere websitede. Similarly, they can also apply for free connections to the district heating network by calling 02233 / 53-600 or visiting fernwaermevertriebswunsere websitede.
The project also includes significant changes to the traffic arrangements. The traffic direction in Severinusstraße will be reversed during construction, with entry possible via Weidengasse and exit via Fritz-Räcke-Straße, continuing back to Weidengasse via "Im Schetteling". Two-lane traffic is possible between Bonnstraße and AOK-Straße during the construction. However, the access to Severinusstraße from Luxemburger Straße will be closed for two months for the construction of a shaft structure as part of the Lebensader Lux urban development project.
To improve pedestrian accessibility, the sidewalks between Horbeller Straße and AOK-Straße will be made barrier-free again in early 2026. Additionally, the intersections on Luxemburger Straße will be turned into two roundabouts, and the section in between will be designated as a cycle street with a speed limit of 30 km/h.
Funding for the project totals 7,971,413 euros from the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building, as well as from the NRW State Ministry for Home Affairs, Communities, Building and Digitalization. The Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) are project bearers for the federal special program "City and Country".
The Lebensader Lux project is expected to be completed and reopened to traffic in early 2027. For more information, residents can visit the end of this page under "Further Information". It is important to note that the specific completion date has not been provided.
The project also includes the construction of a new pipeline that will connect wastewater from the two tributaries of the Bonnstraße to the canal in Severinusstraße via the shaft structure, decommissioning an old canal in the process. The roundabouts at Bonnstraße and Horbeller Straße will be built after the project’s completion.
Unfortunately, details about which urban development company is responsible for the comprehensive urban development in Hürth-Hermülheim called Lebensader Lux, as well as information about the suspension of traffic on Severinusstraße due to construction works for a new sewage shaft system, are not available at this time.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Lebensader Lux project and its transformative impact on Luxemburger Straße in Hürth-Hermülheim.
