The Düsseldorf Marionette Theatre, located on Bilker Straße, is a unique gem that captivates audiences with its imaginatively designed marionettes and enchanting productions. Founded by Anton Bachleitner in 1985, the theatre has been a staple of puppet theatre in Germany ever since.

Anton Bachleitner's love for puppet theatre began in his childhood in Bad Tölz, where he was introduced to the art form by the Tölz Marionette Theatre. After completing his carpentry training, Bachleitner took on the role of artistic director at the "Rhineland Marionette Theatre Zangerle" in 1981. In 1985, he founded the Düsseldorf Marionette Theatre, where he now serves as its director, in addition to his duties in sculpture, set design, and directing.

One of the theatre's most distinctive features is its close connection to the works of author Michael Ende. Many of the productions at the Düsseldorf Marionette Theatre are based on Ende's beloved stories, such as "Jim Knopf and Lukas the Engine Driver," "Momo," and "The Neverending Story." The marionettes themselves are meticulously crafted to express a range of emotions, from warmth and friendliness to sternness and cunning, bringing the characters to life in a way that is both captivating and heartwarming.

The theatre offers opportunities for visitors to learn more about its unique aspects from 12 noon onwards. Visitors can explore the theatre's history, the craftsmanship behind the marionettes, and the influence of Michael Ende's works on the productions. The marionette ensemble includes a diverse cast of characters, including Jim Knopf, Lukas the locomotive driver, Beelzebub Irrwitzer, Tyti, Papageno, Prince Tamino, and Pamina.

Under the direction of Anton Bachleitner, the Düsseldorf Marionette Theatre continues to thrive, offering a magical escape for audiences of all ages. With its enchanting productions and imaginative marionettes, the theatre remains a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the art of puppet theatre.
