Digital Driver's License Implementation: LapID Introduces the Era of Digital Driver's Licenses
In a significant stride towards digital transformation, LapID has expanded the use case of the EUDI-Wallet to include fleet management. This development comes as the European Union driver's license directive mandates all member states to introduce the digital driver's license as an addition to the physical document.
As part of the EU pilot project "Potential", LapID has tested the EUDI-Wallet under real-world conditions. The goal was to replace existing processes with a tamper-proof, seamless, and wallet-based proof. The digital driver's license, an electronic proof of driving permission, will be securely and verifiably stored in the EUDI-Wallet.
The validity of the driver's license is documented legally in the LapID system, while the validity of the digital driver's license is implied to be handled by the system as well. Companies providing company cars are obligated to regularly check the driver's licenses of their employees, a task that will soon be made easier with the ability to initiate a driver's license check via a connection request to the employee's wallet.
Fleet managers will find the digital driver's license integrated into the clear role distribution within the EUDI-Wallet and LapID app, facilitating verification, logging, and integration into corporate processes. The driver confirms the request in the wallet, for example, via PIN or biometric procedure.
In Germany, the development of the digital driver's license according to the EU driver's license directive is being managed by the Federal Printing Office (Bundesdruckerei) and related federal authorities. However, specific details on the responsible entity for the digital driver's license project itself are not explicitly stated. In contrast, Austria’s digital driver's license is developed by the youniqx Identity AG, a subsidiary of the Austrian Federal Printing Office (ÖSD) on behalf of the Federal Computing Center (BRZ).
LapID's contribution to the further development of digital driver's license control in fleet management is significant. The wallet provides the secured proofs, specifically including the digital driver's license, making the process more efficient and secure for all parties involved. This development is part of the seamless process created by the EUDI-Wallet and LapID app, ensuring a smooth transition into the digital age of driver's license management.
In Germany, a draft bill for a fifth amendment to the Road Traffic Act is being prepared to transpose these requirements into federal law. As the rollout of the digital driver's license continues, it is expected to bring about a more streamlined and secure method of driver's license management, benefiting both individuals and companies alike.
