Difficulty escalates in locating missing father amidst Lake Como's stormy weather conditions
The search for a 55-year-old German man, well-known as a restaurateur in his hometown of Buhl, Baden-Württemberg, continues over the weekend in Lake Como, Italy.
The man, who is said to have Italian roots, went missing on Monday while out on the lake with his wife and two children on a rented boat. The incident occurred near the village of Dorio, on the eastern shore of the lake.
According to reports, the man jumped off a boat into the lake to help his children who had inexplicably fallen into the water. Tragically, while the children were rescued, the man did not resurface.
Lake Como, where the incident occurred, is one of the deepest lakes in Europe, with depths of up to 410 meters. This depth, combined with the typical winds on the lake that cause strong waves, has made the search a challenging endeavour.
Rescue teams have been working tirelessly for up to ten hours each day, and the search efforts have been ongoing for six days. Other rescue teams have joined the efforts, working until late into the night.
The search is being hampered by the severe weather that has been affecting the Lombardy region since Thursday. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and storm gusts have made the conditions difficult for the rescue teams.
To aid in the search, a remotely operated underwater robot is being used to search the accident site, which is over 200 meters deep.
The city of Lake Como, where the incident occurred, has a population of around 30,000 people.
The father's identity has not been released by the authorities, but it is known that he is a well-respected figure in his hometown of Buhl. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
