DHL Relocates New Cargo Facility to CargoCity South at Frankfurt Airport
Frankfurt Airport's New DHL Cargo Hall Opens
Frankfurt Airport has welcomed a new addition to its air cargo operations with the opening of the new DHL cargo hall, named CargoCity South. This development is part of Fraport's "CargoHub" master plan, designed to boost cargo throughput by 2040.
The new air cargo hall, spanning 55,000 square meters, stands near Gate 31 and boasts 54 doors and truck docks, as well as ample driving and maneuvering areas. It offers 24,500 square meters of hall space and flexible office space, making it an ideal location for DHL Global Forwarding's air freight operations.
In a statement, Anke Giesen, Executive Director of Retail and Real Estate at Fraport AG, described the full operation of the air cargo hall by DHL Global Forwarding as a major milestone. The strategy behind this development is geared towards sustainably developing the location in line with the demand in the cargo segment.
To support this green initiative, a photovoltaic system with a peak capacity of two megawatts is being installed on the roof of the new hall. The green electricity generated will be fed into the airport's power grid upon completion. Moreover, the facility offers 25 truck parking spaces and around 185 car parking spaces, 20 of which are equipped with charging stations for electric vehicles.
The long-term growth strategy of the airport aims to provide ideal conditions for partners and customers for further growth in Frankfurt. Previously, DHL Global Forwarding was represented at three different locations within Frankfurt Airport. By consolidating its operations at CargoCity South, the company is now able to focus on optimization, digitization, and process innovation to achieve its goal of increasing annual cargo throughput by around 50 percent to three million tons by 2040.
This commissioning of the new DHL cargo hall is seen as a significant step in the development of Frankfurt Airport as a leading air cargo hub. In 2021, another state-of-the-art Air Cargo Hall was handed over to Fiege Air Cargo Logistics GmbH & Co. KG, further expanding the airport's capacity to meet the growing demands of the cargo industry.
In conclusion, the opening of the new DHL cargo hall marks an important milestone in the development of Frankfurt Airport as a leading global air cargo hub. With its focus on sustainability, innovation, and customer-centric design, Fraport is paving the way for a future of efficient and environmentally friendly air cargo operations.
