Developments underway in Moabit: WBM constructs 108 apartments on Rathenower Street
In the heart of Berlin's Moabit district, a new residential quarter is emerging on Rathenower Straße, bringing 108 apartments, social facilities, and public spaces to the community. The project, spearheaded by WBM, aims to contribute to the social infrastructure of the district and prioritises affordability and sustainability.
The development is being carried out in close collaboration with residents, administration, and local stakeholders, ensuring that the needs of the community are at the forefront of the project. The groundbreaking for the project took place in May 2025, and since then, visible progress has been made. The ground floor is now visible in its raw state, but several floors are still under construction.
A central feature of the project is the planned town square, serving as an interface between the quarter and the Fritz-Schloss Park. This community hub will include a neighbourhood meeting point, café, and public playground, fostering a sense of community and encouraging social interaction.
The project is designed with ecological aspects in mind, incorporating green roofs, rainwater management, and new trees to improve the local microclimate. In addition, the project aims to be climate-resilient, with reforestation planned for removed woods after construction is completed.
The residential quarter will predominantly consist of 91 publicly subsidized rental apartments, primarily for households with a housing voucher. So-called cluster apartments are planned, which can adapt flexibly to different life situations. Rents for the publicly subsidized units start at seven euros per square meter, aligning the project with affordable housing.
Accessibility is a key focus of the project, with a significant portion of the apartments being designed to be barrier-free, including four wheelchair-accessible apartments.
Since 2019, several participation events have taken place, whose results have been integrated into the building plan. The search results do not specify the name of the architect who planned the residential project, but WBM has expressed a desire to demonstrate that affordable housing and sustainable planning can coexist.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2027, allowing the first residents to move in and enjoy their new homes in this vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive community.
