Deterioration in the condition of the nursing home

As the Christmas season approaches, long-term care facilities in Germany are bracing for potential challenges. Nursing professionals are falling ill due to the ongoing pandemic, and the situation may become especially challenging during the festive period.

The German Association of Care Professions (DBfK) has expressed concern over a deterioration in the care situation, with colleagues in the care profession working at the limit of their endurance and beyond. Intensive care units are reportedly already fully occupied, and the health of nurses is at risk due to possible infection and sustained high stress.

The lack of protective equipment like masks and special protective clothing for nursing staff was a concern at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and this issue persists. FFP2 masks are reportedly available, but there are concerns about protective gloves, which are experiencing shortages. Ensuring hygiene rules among visitors is a concern due to the lack of staff, and visiting regulations during the Christmas season could be problematic.

Rapid testing is possible, but there is a lack of staff for testing visitors. DBfK President Christel Bienstein stated that the situation of professional caregivers has worsened and expressed concerns about the visiting regulations during the Christmas season. The Christmas season could potentially exacerbate the existing challenges in care situations.

The DBfK has emphasised the need for staff to enforce hygiene rules among visitors during the Christmas season, given the increased risk of transmission during gatherings. However, the shortage of staff makes this a significant concern.

In light of these challenges, it is crucial to prioritise the safety and well-being of nursing professionals and those in their care. The situation remains fluid, and ongoing efforts are being made to address these issues and ensure the best possible care for all involved.
