In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the United Nations (U.N.) has declared a famine in Gaza City, where nearly one million people remain. The U.S. is actively involved in negotiations to release hostages held by Hamas in Gaza, with the U.S. President, Donald Trump, urging for their immediate release.

Trump stated that over 30 bodies are involved in the current hostage negotiation, following the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel during which 251 hostages were taken, 47 of whom are believed to still be in Gaza, including 25 believed to be dead.

Israel has demanded that Hamas release all hostages at once, disarm, and relinquish control of Gaza, among other conditions. The Israeli military has been stepping up air strikes in the area and operations on the city's outskirts, despite calls to abandon the plan.

The military has flattened a high-rise in Gaza City on Saturday, identifying it as the Sussi residential tower. Another high-rise was issued an evacuation order, warning of an imminent strike. Residents of Gaza City, however, believe it makes little difference whether they stay or flee, as the vast majority of the city's population of over two million people have been displaced at least once during the war.

The Israeli military warned people to flee south to a "humanitarian zone" ahead of a planned offensive to capture Gaza City. Humanitarian aid and medical care were promised to be provided at Al-Mawasi, the designated humanitarian zone along the southern coast.

The military spokesman called on residents to leave Gaza City for Al-Mawasi, but the U.N. has warned of a looming "disaster" if the assault proceeds in Gaza. The U.N. has also expressed concern over the potential impact on the already dire humanitarian situation in the region.

The USA is mediating indirectly with Hamas in the Gaza conflict, together with Qatar and Egypt, in the negotiation process for the release of people held captive in Gaza. Trump has been vocal in his support for the hostages, saying, "Let them all out right now, let them all out, and much better things will happen for them."

The U.N. and international community continue to call for a de-escalation of the conflict and a return to peace talks, expressing deep concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza City.
