Denmark implements satellite-tracked fee system for heavy goods vehicles
In a significant move towards modernising its transportation infrastructure, Denmark has implemented a new heavy goods vehicles (HGV) tolling system. This system, known as KmToll, replaces the previous time-based Eurovignette system and is set to revolutionise the way commercial vehicles are charged for using the country's road network.
The technology for the new system is provided by Kapsch TrafficCom, a leading global provider of intelligent transportation systems. Kapsch TrafficCom supplies hardware and software to the Danish partner company Brobizz, ensuring a seamless integration with the existing systems. Carolin Treichl, Kapsch TrafficCom's EVP EMEA, expressed pride in the company's partnership with Brobizz, highlighting the precision, flexibility, and environmental friendliness of their solution.
The KmToll system currently covers around 10,900km of road and all environmental zones in Denmark. Satellite tolling, a key feature of the system, enables more flexible coverage of the tolled road networks. This technology requires less roadside infrastructure and less maintenance compared to other distance-based tolling systems, making it a cost-effective and efficient solution.
With satellite tolling, lorries are billed based on the exact distance travelled, offering a fairer toll structure compared to the previous time-based system. From 2028, the entire public road network, covering around 75,000km, will be subject to tolls in Denmark.
The new system is not only beneficial for the Danish government but also for the global transportation industry. Senior decision-makers from around the world will attend conferences hosted by Akabo Media to discuss tolling, road pricing, and usage-charges. These conferences will take place in Miami (September 2025), Singapore (October 2025), Brussels (March 2026), and Abu Dhabi (May 2026).
Akabo Media's Road User Charging Conference series offers invaluable insights, innovative ideas, and networking opportunities with global leaders driving transportation system transformation. Attendees will have the chance to learn about the latest developments in satellite tolling and its potential impact on the future of transportation.
It is important to note that the company that will install toll charges on the entire public motorway network in Denmark starting in 2028 is not provided in the given search results. However, with Kapsch TrafficCom's proven track record and expertise in intelligent transportation systems, it is expected that they will continue to play a significant role in Denmark's transportation future.
