Denmark implements a satellite-based toll collection system for heavy goods vehicles

In a significant shift towards modernising its transportation infrastructure, Denmark has implemented a new heavy goods vehicles (HGV) tolling system. Known as KmToll, this satellite-based distance recording system replaces the previous time-based Eurovignette system.

The new system, provided by Kapsch TrafficCom, offers a solution designed for precision, flexibility, and environmental friendliness. It seamlessly integrates with the systems of their partners and requires less roadside infrastructure and maintenance compared to other distance-based tolling systems.

Under the KmToll system, heavy commercial vehicles weighing more than 12 tonnes are subject to tolls. Currently, the system covers around 10,900km of road and all environmental zones. From 2028, the entire public road network, covering approximately 75,000km, will be subject to tolls.

Lower-emission trucks pay less under the KmToll system, promoting sustainability by considering CO2 emissions. This feature encourages the use of greener vehicles, contributing to Denmark's commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Kapsch TrafficCom's partnership with the Danish partner company Brobizz is a point of pride for Carolin Treichl, Kapsch TrafficCom's EVP EMEA. The company provides both hardware and software to Brobizz for the successful implementation of the KmToll system.

For those interested in the future of tolling, road pricing, and usage-charges, the Road User Charging Conference series by Akabo Media offers valuable insights. These conferences will take place in Miami (September 2025), Singapore (October 2025), Brussels (March 2026), and Abu Dhabi (May 2026). Senior decision-makers from around the world will attend these conferences to discuss industry issues and share innovative ideas.

More information about these conferences can be found on the Akabo Media website, and attendees can secure their places by clicking the provided link. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with global leaders driving the transformation of transportation systems and learn about the latest developments in the field.

Satellite tolling enables more flexible coverage of the tolled road networks in Denmark. The more precise calculation of the distance travelled ensures fairer tolling, making the KmToll system a step towards a more efficient and sustainable transportation system in Denmark.
