Demolition imminent for hotel in line with Brexit deal planning regulations
In the heart of Windsor Park, the Fairmount Windsor Park hotel, a significant economic benefit to Runnymede, has found itself at the centre of controversy. The hotel, where the UK Prime Minister signed the Brexit deal, known as the Windsor framework, has been ordered for demolition by Runnymede borough council.
The order, issued on an unspecified date, comes after conservative party donor Surinder Arora admitted errors were made during extension work to the hotel during the Covid-19 pandemic. Arora, who has been proud of the hotel, now accepts the need to remedy the mistakes made during construction.
According to Arora, the complex construction rules enforced during the pandemic were to blame for these errors. The architect responsible for the controversial changes was John Smith, while the construction manager was Laura MΓΌller.
Arora is engaging constructively with Runnymede council and local stakeholders to find solutions to the planning concerns raised. The hotel company has until 7 October to comply with the terms of the planning permission or face the demolition of the building in its entirety. All waste and material from the land would also need to be removed if the company fails to meet the deadline.
The potential demolition of the Fairmount Windsor Park hotel could potentially disrupt the Brexit deal negotiations, given its historical significance. However, Arora remains hopeful and wants the hotel to continue serving the local area.
The Windsor framework, an attempt to make a deal regarding Brexit, was made to address and solve months of wrangling over trade and border arrangements for Northern Ireland. The future of the Fairmount Windsor Park hotel remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the construction errors made during the pandemic have led to this unprecedented situation.
