Are massive groups of players surrounding referees a thing of the past for the European Championship, as Uefa intends?

Official makes request - Demanding a revolution in rules for the European Championship!

On Tuesday, head referee Roberto Rosetti (56/Italy) emphasized in a UEFA statement: "We urge teams to make sure only the captain communicates with the referee."

It seems captains have an even bigger responsibility! This means for the German national team: Ilkay Gündogan (33/FC Barcelona) is the one who speaks to the referee - no exceptions.

Is this just a dream or might it become a reality soon?

The UEFA statement continues: "On the other hand, captains must ensure their teammates don't put pressure on the referee or speak directly with him, allowing for decisions to be made more swiftly and respectfully."

This new rule was introduced by the International Football Association Boards (the FIFA body responsible for rule changes) in early March. But when will it officially go into effect?

Initially, it was only a trial, so the associations still have the freedom to implement the rule. Some speculate that this rule might become mandatory for EURO 24.

Referees will also be required to justify their decisions more often to limit unnecessary complaints.

Mr. Rosetti comments on penalties: "Players who disobey the captain's role, complain to the referee, or act disrespectfully will receive a warning."

The goal is to foster a more respectful environment between the teams and the referees.

An intriguing detail: if the captain is the goalkeeper, an outfield player must take on the role of captain in questionable situations. This will be the case for the Slovenian team at the European Championships. Goalie Jan Oblak (31/Atletico Madrid) will lead Slovenia onto the field as captain.
