Demand Soaring for Music Support Services, According to Georgina Levers Angell's Account in BRIT Trust Diaries
In the heart of the UK music industry, Music Support continues to make strides in providing essential mental health services. Established in 2016, the organization has been a beacon of hope for those grappling with various challenges.
At the helm of Music Support's frontline services since 2021 is Georgina Levers Angell, the head of support services. Under her leadership, Music Support has grown and evolved, offering a comprehensive range of services tailored to meet the growing demand in the industry.
One of the key services Music Support offers is Recovery Support Groups, providing a safe space for individuals to share their experiences and work towards recovery together. Additionally, brief interventions are available for those seeking immediate help.
Beyond direct support, Music Support also offers advocacy and funding assistance for treatment, helping individuals navigate the complexities of accessing the care they need.
The organization's efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Christopher Meredith Foundation and The BRIT Trust have both lent their support, backing initiatives like The Ripple Effect, a free workshop designed to help individuals better understand addiction and support their loved ones.
Music Support's services are delivered by a team of in-house psychotherapists and highly skilled support staff with over 30 years' combined experience of working in the music industry. All members of the Support Services team are fully qualified BACP counsellors, making Music Support the only mental health charity in the UK music industry with this distinction.
The demand for Music Support's services has been on the rise, with a 51% increase in demand for its Support Services in 2024 alone. Weekly support calls facilitated by qualified counsellors are available for beneficiaries, as well as for the family and friends of those affected.
In response to this growing need, Music Support has introduced a groundbreaking new stepped care model, offering four distinct levels of support, from low-level preventative care through to support for individuals with more complex needs.
For those seeking professional assessments and treatment, Music Support operates a confidential helpline (0800 030 6789). The organization also has strong referral pathways, supported by clinical advice from BAPAM, the medical charity for the music industry, alongside connections to clinical specialists, detox units, and residential treatment facilities.
Music Support's services extend beyond treatment, with a focus on providing continuous aftercare post-treatment. The 2024 festival season wellbeing survey revealed alarming statistics, with 26% of respondents acknowledging having drug and/or alcohol problems, 76% reporting feeling "down or depressed", 69% saying they suffered from "low self-confidence", and 21% experiencing suicidal thoughts within the previous 12 months.
Music Support's mission is clear: to provide a lifeline for those in the UK music industry who are struggling with mental health issues and addiction. With its comprehensive services, qualified team, and unwavering commitment, Music Support continues to make a significant impact in the industry.
