Defender Lewis Hall from Newcastle United will miss eight games due to his exclusion from the main squad
Newcastle United's UEFA Champions League Squad Adjustments
Newcastle United, currently competing in the UEFA Champions League, has made some changes to their squad due to UEFA's regulations.
Jamaal Lascelles, a key defender for the Magpies, will miss eight league phase games for Newcastle United. This decision comes after Lascelles was axed from the UEFA Champions League squad. Lascelles has not played this season after rupturing his ACL over a year ago.
Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, has made a decision to exclude one experienced player from the club's 25-man squad to comply with UEFA's rules.
The rules state that no club may have more than 25 players on List A during the season. A minimum of eight places are reserved exclusively for 'locally trained players', and no more than four 'association-trained players' can be listed in these eight places on List A.
The term 'association-trained' is more commonly known as 'homegrown' and relates to players who were trained in England but not necessarily with Newcastle United over the same period. Youngsters Lewis Hall and Lewis Miley are included in Newcastle United's 'B List' squad, meeting the required criteria of being homegrown players born after January 1, 2004.
'List B' is a simple and flexible way for clubs to register young, homegrown players without using up a valuable spot on their main 25-man 'List A' squad. Each club is entitled to register an unlimited number of players on List B during the season, with the list submission deadline being no later than 24.00 CET on the day before the match in question.
Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Fabian SchaΜr, and Emil Krafth have been included in Newcastle United's UEFA Champions League squad. The club can change their Champions League squad this season. According to UEFA regulations, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition, with the deadline being 5 February 2026.
Newcastle United will face FC Barcelona (h), Paris Saint-Germain (a), Bayer Leverkusen (a), Benfica (h), Marseille (a), PSV Eindhoven (h), Athletic Club (h), and Union Saint-Gilloise (a) in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.
Miley and Hall are registered on separate team lists because they were involved in substitutions during the Newcastle United vs. Liverpool FC Premier League match, meaning they entered the game as replacement players at different times and thus appear on different registered lists for the match.
The situation of registering new players for the Champions League squad mirrors the case of Chelsea in the UEFA Conference League last term, with Cole Palmer dropped from their initial squad before being reintroduced for their vital knockout stage games.
