Deer collisions lead to health issues, raise safety worries in Ontario County
In the picturesque town of Canandaigua, local leaders have initiated a study aimed at addressing two pressing concerns: the rising cases of tick-borne illnesses and the frequent deer-related car crashes.
The focus of the study is education, with the hope that by educating the community about these issues, preventative measures can be taken to combat the rise in Lyme disease cases. Deer are believed to be a major contributor to the increase in Lyme disease cases in Ontario County, where Canandaigua is located.
The number of Lyme disease cases in Ontario County has seen a significant jump, with 33 cases reported in 2021 compared to nearly 300 this year. Another tick-borne illness, anaplasmosis, has also been identified as a concern in the area. Anaplasmosis is harder to detect and can be fatal, particularly for older adults.
FingerLakes1.com, the region's leading all-digital news publication, has been keeping residents informed for more than two decades. The platform provides a contact email address for sending leads, enabling the community to contribute to the discourse on these important issues.
A county meeting on the issue of tick-borne illnesses and deer management is scheduled for September 8. After the initial education phase, wider action on deer control may be considered.
As the community comes together to address these issues, it is clear that education and collaboration are key to a safer and healthier future for all.
