Deepfake Pornography Surges as AI Tools Become More Accessible
Deepfakes—AI-generated images, videos, or audio that look real—are now easier than ever to create. Advances in technology mean almost anyone can produce convincing fakes, making them harder to detect. This rise has led to growing concerns, particularly around non-consensual deepfake pornography targeting ordinary people.
Deepfakes use artificial intelligence to manipulate or generate content that appears authentic. While some may show slight flaws like blurriness or unnatural blinking, many are now nearly indistinguishable from reality. The technology's accessibility has made it a tool for misuse, especially in creating explicit material without consent.
Most victims of deepfake pornography are women, with men being the primary perpetrators. Social media images often serve as the source material for these manipulations. In Germany, no specific laws currently address deepfakes, but Federal Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig is drafting a 'digital protection against violence act' to tackle the issue.
The EU has already taken steps with the AI Act, requiring providers to label AI-generated content in a machine-readable format. The Digital Services Act also demands that platforms remove illegal deepfakes quickly. Meanwhile, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied and Integrated Security is developing AI tools to detect manipulated content.
One high-profile case involved actress Collien Fernandes, who filed a complaint in November 2024 against her ex-husband, Christian Ulmen. He allegedly distributed deepfake pornography of her, primarily on Instagram. While exact numbers for non-public victims remain unclear, experts warn that such cases are rising.
Germany's planned legislation aims to curb the spread of harmful deepfakes, particularly non-consensual pornography. The EU's existing rules require clearer labelling and faster removal of fake content. As detection methods improve, authorities and tech platforms face growing pressure to protect potential victims from misuse.
