Launched in 2023, Sui is a decentralized, permissionless Layer-1 blockchain developed by Mysten Labs. The team behind Sui consists of former Meta engineers, bringing valuable experience in addressing scalability, security, and regulatory compliance for global financial systems.

The total supply of SUI tokens, the native token of the Sui network, is capped at 10 billion. A significant portion of the total supply is allocated to various groups:

  • 50% of the total supply is allocated to the Community Reserve.
  • 20% is allocated to Early Contributors.
  • 14% is allocated to Investors (Series A & B).
  • 6% is allocated to the Community Access Program (Public Sale).
  • 10% is allocated to Mysten Labs Treasury.

Sui's core aim is to enable efficient, low-latency, and rapid digital asset management for high-performance applications in gaming, Decentralized Finance (DeFi), commerce, and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). To achieve this, Sui offers user-centric features such as Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Login for easier access to dApps and programmable transaction blocks for complex dApp creation with gas efficiency and secure atomic operations.

Move, a smart contract language, powers Sui. It is designed to be secure, intuitive, and expressive, featuring Programmable Transaction Blocks (PTBs) for rich and safe code composability, and dynamic fields for added flexibility and composability.

Sui's economic model aims to align incentives for users, SUI token holders, and validators. The SUI token is used for gas fees, staking, governance, and as a versatile utility and ecosystem asset. The Community Reserve includes Stake Subsidies, which unlock linearly over 7 years.

Sui's object-centric data model allows for significantly faster ownership transfers, instant updates, and parallel transaction execution, leading to high throughput, ultra-low latency, and simplified composability. As of June 2025, Sui's performance metrics show impressive capabilities, with a theoretical transactions per second (TPS) of 297,000, a current TPS of ~1,800, and fast time to finality for simple transactions. The total value locked (TVL) on Sui was $1.8 billion, with a monthly stablecoin transfer volume of over $70 billion.

However, it's important to note that token unlock events can potentially impact market dynamics due to potential selling pressure. Sui operates on a permissionless Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) system, employing Mysticeti, a novel Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus protocol for fast transaction settlement times.

A scheduled unlock in February 2025 released over 64 million SUI tokens, adding a significant amount to the circulating supply. As Sui continues to grow and develop, it will be interesting to see how its unique features and economic model shape the future of blockchain technology.
