In the once-posh estates of Buruburu, Kariobangi South, Pioneer, Donholm, Green Span, Greenfields, and other areas in Eastlands, the glory of yesteryears seems to have faded. The lack of proper planning for infrastructure has taken its toll, leaving these areas lacking essential amenities such as footpaths, roads, and playgrounds for children.

Steve Omondi Onyango, a civil engineer and CEO of Perspects Constructions Ltd, echoes this sentiment. He states that the shoddy construction work in many parts of Nairobi is causing housing estates to lose their intended meaning. This has been exacerbated by urban expansion, which has resulted in these estates becoming less attractive.

The challenges faced by these estates have resulted in a significant reduction in rent for main houses by at least Sh5,000. Residents are forced to hire private garbage collectors over weekends due to the issues with waste management. Sewage disposal and garbage collection are serious problems in these estates.

Rainy seasons pose a major challenge to the residents of these estates. The bursting of drainage water and sewer pipes is happening at an alarming rate. Water rationing is constant, even during rainy seasons, and security lights may go for months without operating.

The lack of proper planning has resulted in improper drainage systems and a lack of facilities in these estates. Developers often overlook the requirements that make an estate meet the necessary standards. Urban expansion programs have changed things in Eastlands, with many people buying lands and plots along Kangundo roads to build their houses.

Despite these challenges, specific persons or institutions involved in improving infrastructure and planning in East Nairobi residential areas who have shown no noticeable progress are not named in the available search results. Ayoro advises the counties to move quickly and address the challenges affecting many estates.
