New THW Accommodation to be Built in Haltern am See

The Technical Relief Agency (THW) is set to construct a new accommodation in Haltern am See, as part of their nationwide construction program from 2020-2030. This local association, established in 1962 and belonging to the state association North Rhine-Westphalia, will soon have a modern, energy-efficient home.

The first sod was turned on August 18, 2025, marking the beginning of this significant project. The construction and service provider Goldbeck, winners of the first framework agreement for the implementation of up to 60 new THW accommodations, will likely be responsible for the construction. However, the name of the construction company for the Haltern am See project has not yet been disclosed.

The new building will provide a home for 91 volunteers and offer sufficient space for the Technical Zug with its two specialist groups. It will boast around 500 square meters of usable area, a hall, and a carport with 12 parking spaces. The construction will take place on an approximately 6,000 square meter federal property in the district of Sythen.

The new THW buildings across North Rhine-Westphalia will offer more space for training and exercises for the deployment forces. This is crucial, as the THW, a federal operational organization carried by volunteers with approximately 88,000 volunteers nationwide, is facing increased requirements due to the changing global political situation.

THW President Sabine Lackner emphasises that modernising THW properties is the right way forward to a more deployable and resilient civil protection. The new buildings will be equipped with integrated heat pumps and photovoltaic systems, increasing their energy independence in case of a blackout.

Modern, well-equipped buildings are being constructed to show appreciation for the volunteers' commitment. Approximately 20,000 people are actively involved in 127 local units in the North Rhine-Westphalia region alone. The local association Haltern am See is one of up to 30 new THW properties with vehicle halls being constructed nationwide.

The construction project is being carried out jointly by the Federal Agency for Real Property (BImA), the Building and Property Management North Rhine-Westphalia, and the THW. Energy efficiency, climate protection, and sustainability are crucial factors in the construction of the new THW buildings. The BImA, the central real estate company of the federal government, is the owner and client of the new accommodations.

The changed security policy situation in Europe and worldwide is impacting the strategic positioning of the THW. Modern, well-equipped buildings with ample space for material and personnel are being constructed to ensure the THW is ready to face any challenge that comes their way.
