December's $1.8B Powerball Win Caps a Record Month for Lottery Luck
December proved a lucky month for lottery players around the world. Big wins were claimed in Florida, Illinois, Arkansas, and even Australia. One winner walked away with a life-changing $5 million prize after buying a simple scratch-off ticket.
Agustin Garcia Guerrero, a 58-year-old from Labelle, Florida, hit the top prize in the state's $5,000,000 CA$H MONEY scratch-off game. He purchased the winning $20 ticket at Sunshine, a store on Tamiami Trail East in Naples. On December 8, he travelled to the Florida Lottery's Tallahassee headquarters to collect his winnings.
Guerrero opted for a one-time lump sum of $3,053,000 instead of annual payments. The game offered four top prizes of $5 million, with a total prize pool of $328 million. Players had a 1 in 2.93 chance of winning any prize in the draw.
Meanwhile, an Illinois Lottery player also struck gold with a $250,000 win from a $20 scratch-off. Across the Pacific, a woman from Hackham, South Australia, secured a AUD 20 million Powerball jackpot on Christmas Day.
The biggest win of the month came in Arkansas, where a single ticket holder claimed the $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot—one of the largest in US history. This surpassed the previous record of $1.765 billion, won by a California player just two months earlier on October 11.
Guerrero's $5 million win adds to a string of major lottery payouts in late 2023. The Arkansas Powerball jackpot now stands as the highest single-ticket prize ever awarded in the US. With multiple winners across different games, December proved an unusually lucky period for lottery players worldwide.
