In the heart of winter, many might think that plant growth slows to a halt. However, with the ability to control the indoor climate, propagating houseplants has become a popular winter pastime for green-fingered enthusiasts.

Samantha Adler, founder of Houseplant Concierge, shares her preference for Monstera plants when it comes to propagation. She appreciates their ease and rooting success, making them ideal candidates for indoor propagation. Monstera cuttings, prepared in December, will be ready for the spring growing season. Roots will form in about a month, and the cuttings can be potted up once the roots are 1.5-2 inches long.

Another popular houseplant is the Rex Begonia, particularly the Cissus discolor, known for its unique leaf colors, textures, and variegations. Cissus discolor cuttings should be placed in a potting mix that retains some moisture and given bright, indirect light. Root development for these cuttings should take place between 1-3 weeks.

Lindsay Sisti, founder of All the Plant Babies, emphasises the advantages of indoor propagation during winter. She explains that with control over the indoor climate, many houseplants can be propagated throughout the year.

Pothos, commonly known as Devil's Ivy, is one of the easiest and fastest plants to grow indoors. Pothos can be propagated by taking cuttings from the vines and placing them in a glass of water. The 'Painted Lady' Philodendron is another favourite for propagation, with cuttings developing roots in 1-3 weeks.

For those looking for a challenge, Hoya carnosa, a tropical climbing vine, is a great choice for indoor propagation. Hoya plant propagation involves cutting the stem just above a node and submerging it in a jar of water until it grows roots.

Snake plant (Sansevieria) is often found on lists of best houseplants for beginners and is easy to duplicate. Snake plant propagation involves separating a mature plant through the process of division.

Hilton Carter, a plant expert and author, is a fan of propagating plants and gifting them. He advises making a cut from a healthy part of the plant that is showing new growth for the best propagation success. His favourite Philodendron to propagate is the 'Painted Lady' due to the number of nodes that grow below each leaf growth.

Experts recommend propagating plants in Germany in December that can be started indoors or in heated greenhouses, such as certain perennials and vegetables tolerant to cold. However, no specific plants are highlighted for direct outdoor propagation in December due to winter conditions. Generally, propagation by cuttings or indoors is advised in this period.

The beauty of houseplants and propagating indoors is that you can control the climate to increase propagation success all year round. When taking a Monstera cutting, it should be made at a node. It may take a little longer for plants to root in December, but with warmth and artificial light in homes, many houseplants can be propagated throughout the year. The best time of year to propagate, according to Hilton Carter, is between spring and summer.
