Deadly funicular incident in Portugal documented in initial report, claiming 16 lives
In a tragic turn of events, the popular tourist cable car connecting Lisbon's Restauadores and Principe Real districts, known as Elevador da Gloria, derailed during one of its trips on [insert date]. The accident resulted in the unfortunate loss of 16 lives, hailing from various parts of the world: 3 Britons, 2 South Koreans, 2 Canadians, 1 Frenchwoman, 1 Swiss, 1 American, and 1 Ukrainian.
Upon inspection, it was clear that the connecting cable snapped at the point where it was attached to the cabin at the top of the hill. The two cabins traveled no more than 6 meters before losing balance. The driver of the cabins applied both pneumatic and manual brakes, but they had no effect on stopping or reducing the speed.
The Air and Rail Accident Investigation Bureau published a report on the incident on Saturday. The investigation revealed that the accident was caused by a failure of the cable connecting the two funicular cars, which detached from its attachment point on the upper part of the car. However, the reasons behind the cable failure and the mystery surrounding the ineffectiveness of the brakes remain under investigation.
Doubts about proper maintenance have arisen since the maintenance contract for the Elevador da Gloria ended shortly before the accident. The final report, containing facts, analysis, and conclusions about the causes of the accident, will be published at a later date.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by this tragic incident. The Elevador da Gloria, a beloved attraction in Lisbon, has temporarily closed as a result of the accident. Further updates on the investigation and the reopening of the cable car will be provided as information becomes available.
