DC Mayor Bowser and MPD chief grilled about Trump's crime intensification strategy
As the first day of school for K-12 students in Washington D.C. Public Schools approaches on Monday, Aug. 25, the city is witnessing a strengthening National Guard presence. This increase is in response to ongoing crime crackdown efforts, overseen by the White House.
The number of National Guard troops in D.C. could nearly double in the coming days, with the addition of units from three more Republican governors: Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee.
In a bid to address concerns and answer questions regarding this development, an event is scheduled to welcome D.C. Public Schools educators back ahead of the first day of school. This event is expected to take place at 11 a.m. on Aug. 25.
The Mayor of D.C., Muriel Bowser, and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief, Pamela Smith, are expected to attend this event and face questions about the growing number of National Guard troops in D.C. and President Donald Trump's continued federal control of the city.
During this event, the Mayor and the MPD Chief are also anticipated to address the ongoing situation and provide updates on the preparations for the upcoming school year.
This event comes at a critical time as D.C. Public Schools prepare for the return of students after a prolonged period of remote learning due to the pandemic. The city is working diligently to ensure a safe and smooth transition back to in-person learning.
Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the first day of school and the 11 a.m. event on Aug. 25.
