Dazzling performance: "Kaleidoscope" showcases at the Rhine Opera Düsseldorf
The Haus der Deutschen Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf is set to host a captivating three-part ballet evening titled "Kaleidoscope" in March and April. This diverse programme promises an exhilarating blend of traditional and contemporary dance, with each part offering a unique and immersive experience.
The evening kicks off with the second premiere, "Invocation", a striking choreography by South African dance sensation Mthuthuzeli November. Inspired by his childhood memories of a ceremony in his father's hut, complete with fire, dance, and drums, "Invocation" promises to transport audiences to another world. The performance features the mesmerising movements of a wall, which choreographically opens to reveal other dancers, and is accompanied by hypnotic music from American composer Philip Glass.
Soloist Long Zou takes centre stage in "Invocation", joined by the enigmatic figure of João Miranda as a shaman-like character. South African singer Babalwa Zimbini Makwetu's pre-recorded song adds an extra layer of emotion to the performance. The stage design, inspired by the abstract sculptures of Richard Serra, creates a constantly evolving space, with parts of the wall being manually moved by the dancers.
The second act, "Moto Perpetuo", is a breathtaking mix of street dance and ballet, choreographed by Iratxe Ansa and Igor Bacovich. The performance features solo dancer Márcio Mota, known for his dynamic and expressive style. The piece is accompanied by rhythmic music by Alex Wilson and is part of the "Kaleidoscope" programme.
The evening concludes with Jean-Christophe Maillot's ballet "Vers un Pays Sage", named after an abstract painting by Jean Maillot. Created in 1995, this ballet is driven by the dynamic music of John Adams. The dance features Tunji Morakinyo in an intriguing costume resembling a large bird, adding a surreal and captivating element to the performance. Lucas Erni and Damian Torio are also performers in this ballet.
