Bottrop, a city in Germany with over 100,000 inhabitants, has once again been recognised for its exceptional efforts in energy and climate protection. On June 7, 2021, the city received the European Energy Award (EEA) in gold for the fourth time, joining six other municipalities in the MΓΌnster region in receiving this prestigious award.
The EEA is a process-oriented procedure based on quality management systems from the economy. It helps develop measures to reduce energy consumption, increase renewable energy use, and efficiently use non-renewable resources. A municipality awarded the EEA meets the requirements of ISO 14000 in the energy-relevant area, provided all legal requirements are met.
Bottrop's success in energy and climate protection can be attributed to several factors. The city has focused on future viability alongside coal mining, initiating numerous outstanding activities and projects under the Innovation City Ruhr. The city's renovation rate of 3.3 percent is significantly higher than the national average of one percent, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.
Intensive persuasion work, free initial consultations, and the use of funding have contributed to Bottrop's success. The city has also been proactive in optimising its street lighting, successively converting them to LED lights.
Bottrop's approach to climate protection is not just top-down. The city involves society in implementing its climate protection goals, which has been a key factor in its success. This inclusive approach has translated declarations of intent into sustainable energy policy.

The EEA translates declarations of intent into sustainable energy policy, and Bottrop's continued success serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when a city commits to energy and climate protection.
