In the heart of Germany, the city of Bottrop is taking bold steps to combat the effects of climate change and urban heat islands by expanding its public drinking water facilities. This initiative, known as Refill Deutschland, can be accessed at https://refill-deutschland.de/.

The Refill initiative encourages businesses, facilities, and public buildings to register and allow the refilling of water bottles with tap water. This move is aimed at reducing plastic waste from disposable bottles and helping the environment. Currently, there are 6 drinking water fountains in the Bottrop city area, with plans to construct at least 1,000 more in German municipalities, including in or near parks, pedestrian zones, and shopping passages.

Bottrop is focusing on constructing public drinking water fountains, particularly in the city center, which is the largest contiguous heat island. The first drinking water fountain in the Bottrop city center was put into operation on the horse market in June 2025. Additional drinking water fountains will be constructed in the city center next year.

Five specific locations in the Bottrop city center have been identified as suitable for the construction of a drinking water fountain. Participating businesses and locations in Bottrop, as well as nationwide, are marked with a sticker. The Refill initiative allows people to refill their water bottles for free at these participating locations.

For more information about the Refill initiative, you can contact Oliver Schuettler (Tel.: 02041 703728, Email: [email protected], Room 304) or Paul Prinz (Tel.: 02041 703259, Email: [email protected], Room 303). The Refill initiative contact information is accessible on a map (Opens in a new tab).

The Water Resources Act has been amended due to the EU Drinking Water Directive, emphasizing the relevance of this endeavour. More information about the Refill initiative can be found at a file size of 1.17 MB.

If you have water to spare and wish to register on the map, you are encouraged to imitate the Refill initiative. Let's work together to create a more sustainable future for our cities.
