Dangerous decree: City council forbids swimming in the Rhine, posing a potential risk to life

In a bid to ensure public safety, the city of Düsseldorf has issued a swimming ban in the Rhine, effective from August 31, 2025. The ordinance, headed by Fritz Bezold, the Head of the Ordnance Department, is valid until December 31, 2027.

The ban is based on an urgent decision by the city council and is supported by numerous other cities along the Rhine. The Rhine, known for its strong currents, waves, and varying water levels, is extremely dangerous for even experienced swimmers.

Mayor Erik Lierenfeld explained that the ban aims to prevent further tragic accidents. "The Rhine is a heavily trafficked river," he said, "and we want to ensure the safety of our citizens and visitors alike."

The ordinance prohibits swimming in water deeper than knee-high. However, it does not apply to activities explicitly listed as exceptions. These include official duties of authorities or rescue services, exercises and deployments of water rescue services, sports clubs or fire departments, approved events with explicit permission from the city administration, brief entry and exit when boarding or disembarking watercraft, and fishing in accordance with applicable regulations.

The ban in Dormagen's city area applies to all, with some notable exceptions. People standing near the shore or in shallow water can be swept away by waves or currents and pulled into the river. The ordinance provides a basis for law enforcement to intervene and penalize violations, with violations punishable by a fine of up to 1,000 euros.

You can find the official document outlining the swimming ban in Dormagen's city area here. The ban is part of a larger effort by the city administration to ensure the safety of its citizens and visitors.

The ban is not unique to Dormagen. Related bans such as in Meerbusch are valid until the end of 2026. The city that issued the ordinance banning swimming in the Rhine is Düsseldorf, and the ban is effective starting in 2025.

First Deputy Mayor, Fritz Bezold, further explained the ordinance, emphasising the need for public safety. "We want to ensure that everyone enjoys the Rhine safely," he said, "and this ban is a necessary step towards that goal."

The Rhine may be a beautiful river, but its dangers are not to be underestimated. By adhering to the swimming ban, everyone can help ensure a safer environment for all.
